Design Technology Design, Furniture & Fit-Out – Wellington College
Wellington College needed to fully modernise their outdated Design Technology facilities to meet the expectations of today’s parents, students and teachers, particularly in the competitive independent school sector. Design Technology has become a key differentiator, and prospective families increasingly assess a school based on the quality, layout and feel of its practical and digital design spaces.
Their existing DT room could no longer support modern teaching. Storage was inadequate, tool management was inconsistent, sight lines and circulation limited supervision, and the layout lacked the flexibility needed for demonstrations, collaborative projects, CAD/design sessions and hands-on making. The brief called for a space that was the best in the area – highly flexible, visually striking, safe, durable and fully aligned with contemporary DT curriculum requirements across woodworking, prototyping, CAD and digital design.

A Future-Ready, Flagship DT Block Built for Modern Teaching
Brookhouse delivered a complete consultancy and design solution that combined robust construction, curriculum-led planning and carefully designed tool and storage systems. The design started with a new, flexible layout, allowing the space to quickly change between demonstrations, theory, CAD work and practical making, with safe circulation and clear sightlines. Custom workbenches, powder-coated in Wellington College’s colours, were paired with SGL worktops, HPL/MDF cabinetry and reinforced hardware to ensure long-term durability beyond standard classroom furniture. Storage was fully integrated into the benches to solve long-standing organisational issues, and a handleless design offered a clean, modern look.
A custom teaching wall included AV equipment, presentation space and a French cleat tool-control system designed specifically around the school’s hand tools and power tools. This system allows staff to quickly identify missing equipment and maintain an orderly, accountable workshop environment. A dedicated Makerspace was also designed to support 3D printing, rapid prototyping and CAD-to-make workflows, featuring mobile benches that can adapt as technology evolves. The final result is a forward-thinking DT suite that enhances teaching, improves safety, streamlines workflow and visibly demonstrates Wellington College’s commitment to excellence.
